Home decor trends to watch in 2015

We bring you the best from Canada's Interior Design Show (IDS), including the latest in IKEA cabinets, wood furniture, lighting and statement pieces.

Interior Design Show 2015

Sleek design

Unveiling at IDS is Ikea's brand new, versatile kitchen range. This line, called Sektion, will be available starting February 2. It’s all about sleek, clean lines and storage that doesn’t interrupt the aesthetics of your space. It features a new set of measurements for cabinets, doors and drawers, which offers customers the flexibiity to customize a kitchen to any space. We also love the new LED in drawer lighting.

Recycled and refurbished wood

There’s nothing like a deep distressed wood to bring a modern, yet rustic, touch to a room. Roughhewn wood has been a strong trend for numerous years and we’re seeing that continue into 2015.

We love this mutli-functional coffee table/bench from designers Miles & May. Ninety percent of the wood they use is reclaimed, recycled or from local non-commercial sources. Every item is hand crafted.

Lights with legs

The hottest lights in 2015 have legs. Whether they're hanging from the ceiling, attached to the wall or standing on their own look for pieces with elegant, long extended legs or arms. Making everything by hand, Coolican & Company uses local materials and wood from Ontario. Each item is made in small batches, meaning every piece is unique.

This lamp is a great statement piece for any room.

Think mixed materials

No home is complete without a few statement accessories. Mixing materials like marble, wood, and metals is a hot trend showing up everywhere from candleabras to wall clocks to vases. We love these wooden candlestick holders, also by Coolican & Company, that pay homage to antique brass candle holders.

Cross between art and functionality

From hanging to floor lights, designers are creating light fixtures that work as artistic centrepieces. Designed by Sebastian Herkner, and originating in Italy, these beautiful floor lamps are hand blown and come in three sizes and colours.

Independent designers creating out-of-the-box pieces

Studio North and Prototype at IDS showcases independent designers. The designs presented at this year’s IDS were innovative, intelligent and creative. These magnetic key holders, by designer Tat Chao, are wall-mounted to keep your hallway looking streamline and clutter free.
