Soft and soothing

Best suited for: The elegant traditionalist

Designers Erin Feasby and Cindy Bleeks used an icy-blue palette to marry their client's feminine wishes — velvet fabrics, floral patterns and silk draperies — with her husband's desire for dark, rich wood tones and fine tailored shapes. The result is a calming room that's also classic and sophisticated. "The key to decorating with a monochromatic colour scheme is to mix up textures and matte finishes with a bit of gloss or shine. It brings depth and interest while still maintaining the sophistication and subtlety of a monochromatic room."

Cool and contemporary

Best suited for: The edgy minimalist

Going all white is a gutsy choice, but it's a surefire way to make a statement. Select materials with different textures like marble, wood and laminate to keep the room from falling flat.

Moody and dramatic

Best suited for: The bohemian romantic

Shades of blue-green, from dark jade to a aquamarine, give this room a rich, mellow vibe. Sequined pillows, faux fur and a lush carpet add layers of complexity.

Vibrant and crisp

Best suited for: The upbeat optimist

Invigorate a room with an all-green colour scheme. This bright and lively hue is perfectly suited to kitchens or anywhere you want a bolt of energy.
