Yeast infections

What to do when your body is producing too much yeast.
Yeast infection causes, symptoms, and treatments

A vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, or yeast.  While it is normal to have small amounts of yeast in the vagina, an infection occurs when the yeast overgrows.

Yeast infection causes Many factors increase the likelihood of developing a yeast infection, including pregnancy, antibiotic use, the use of birth control pills, a weakened immune system, improperly managed diabetes, tampon use and douching.

Yeast infection symptoms Signs of a vaginal yeast infection may include vaginal itching, burning and white discharge. A swollen, red vulva and pain during intercourse are also common.

Yeast infection diagnosis/tests If you have had yeast infections before, you can use over-the-counter medicines to cure an infection. If you haven't, see your doctor to find out if the cause of your symptoms is a  yeast infection and not a sexually transmitted infection, like gonorrhea. She'll do a pelvis exam and may take a swab of fluid from your vagina which will be tested to see if it's yeast.

Yeast infection treatment Most yeast infections can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal medications, lactobacilli capsules or suppositories that are inserted into the vagina and creams applied to the infected area. Prescription pills may cure the infection faster.

Yeast infection prevention To help prevent vaginal yeast infections, you can:

• Wear cotton underwear instead of synthetic fibres and avoid perfumed soaps.

• Avoid douches and scented hygiene products like bubble bath, pads, and tampons.
