Summer is looking sticky at IKEA: this June, the iconic Swedish retailer is offering up a sweet spin on a savoury in-store classic.
The Swedish meatball lollipop represents a clever limited-edition collaboration between the Swedish home giant and Spanish lollipop brand, Chupa Chups. It's a playful nod to IKEA’s beloved Swedish meatballs, which celebrated their 40th anniversary last year. (The store sells 1.4 billion balls each year.) The idea for the lollipop was pitched to customers as an April Fool’s joke and reportedly became reality a few weeks later.
IKEA hopes that consumers will venture into participating stores in June to answer that question. So far, all either company has said is that the lolly will try to capture the savoury-sweet combination of the Swedish meatball and its accompanying lingonberry jam.
One million meat lollipops—which are vegan—will be distributed in hundreds of stores across many of the global chain’s more than 500 stores. (However, they won’t be available in Sweden, Japan, India, Serbia, Croatia, Romania or Slovenia.)
You can’t buy the lollipops, though; instead they’re going to be offered free in-store during a yet-to-be-announced period. IKEA says customers should watch their social feed for more information in the coming weeks.
