And you think you text too much: Some people actually send messages (often gibberish) in the wee hours of the night without knowing it. Side effects include awkward morning-after conversations with confused friends and family. Markus Schmidt, medical director of the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute, says sleep deprivation and stress are to blame. “One very modest patient texted naked pictures of herself with no recollection of it. It can be embarrassing,” says Schmidt. ”There isn’t enough time to create a memory when we’re awakened for less than three minutes. If a text comes in when the phone has been left beside the bed, a person may wake up in the middle of the night, send a text and return to sleep with no memory of it the next morning.” Save yourself from falling victim by keeping the phone out of the bedroom.
