1/4 cup butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 cup cold milk, or cream
1/4 cup brandy, or rum
1/4 tsp vanilla
Melt butter in a small saucepan set over medium heat. In a medium-size bowl, stir flour with sugar. Then whisk into melted butter until mixture is moistened. Stir in milk or cream until smooth. Cook, whisking frequently, until thickened and smooth, about 5 minutes. Stir in brandy and vanilla. Remove from heat
Serve right away over coffee cake. Or cover and refrigerate for up to a week. Reheat just before serving.
