Growing winter flowers

It typically takes eight to 10 weeks to force a bulb so start in early winter. Hyacinths and crocuses can grow without soil in a bit of water. Try a hyacinth vase to keep roots from rotting and let the roots become part of the display.

For showy colour and giant blossoms, amaryllis can't be beat and the flowers last up to a month. Paperwhites are pretty but highly odiferous. Harness their fragrant power and place in a powder room, not on a dining table.

Place multiple paperwhite or hyacinth bulbs on pretty white quartz stones for a rustic effect, or on smooth river rocks or beach glass pebbles for a zen look.
