I've seen quite a few projects online involving permanent markers and mugs. The idea couldn't be simpler to do. Just find yourself a template to work with, then get marker-happy on your mug. But before you get started, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1. Permanent markers are not food safe, so I recommend only using them on the outside of the mug.

2. Have fun with your creation by using different coloured mugs and markers. (I love silver and gold!) We've put together five ideas to get you started (see images on left).

3. Once you're happy with the design you've created, bake the mug in the oven at 350F for 30 minutes to set the ink. Allow the mugs to cool completely before using or washing them.

4. To preserve your design, I recommend washing them by hand rather than the dishwasher.
